ISTA 6-Amazon SIOC Testing (Ships In Own Container)
Ships In Own Container certification means your retail box is the shipping box. We run the full ISTA 6-Amazon SIOC protocol, all eight package types, at an APASS member lab in Aurora, Ontario.
- Drop the Over-Box: SIOC certification removes Amazon's added carton, the dunnage inside it and the prep fee attached to both.
- All Eight Types: Parcel, LTL, palletized and the TV and monitor variants, each with its own weight and girth bracket.
- Accredited Report: The ISTA 6 Series sits on our A2LA scope, so the result is ISO 17025 accredited data.
- Tested Where You Ship From: A Canadian lab, so the samples do not cross a border before the test starts.

What does SIOC mean?
SIOC stands for Ships In Own Container. It means the product’s own retail package is strong enough to be the shipping container: it goes into Amazon’s network as it sits on a shelf, with no master carton added around it and no dunnage packed alongside. Amazon certifies packaging as SIOC on a passing ISTA 6-Amazon SIOC test. For a rigid fragile product under 50 lb that test has to run at an ISTA certified laboratory rather than being self-tested, and every sample has to pass. For rigid non-fragile items in the same weight class Amazon also accepts its own self-drop test, so the lab route is a choice rather than a requirement.
The upside is direct. No over-box means no second carton to buy, no Kraft paper to fill it, and no prep fee for Amazon to apply. It also removes the most common source of transit damage claims, which is a product moving inside a box that was sized for something else.
SIOC ships Parcel or LTL to North America and carries no overall weight cap. The branching that decides your test is by package type, not by a single weight limit.
The eight SIOC types, and which one is yours
ISTA 6-Amazon SIOC splits into eight types on weight, girth and delivery method. Find your row before you ask for a price, because the type decides the drop heights, the vibration profile and the sample count.
- Type A: Parcel, under 50 lb.
- Type B: Parcel, 50 lb to under 100 lb.
- Type C: Parcel, 100 lb and over. Parcel itself caps at 150 lb.
- Type D: LTL, under 100 lb.
- Type E: LTL, 100 lb and over.
- Type F: Palletized. Adds the fork lift handling battery.
- Type G: TV or monitor, Parcel, under 150 lb.
- Type H: TV or monitor, LTL, 150 lb and over.
You are pushed into the LTL types by any one of these: weight over 150 lb, any single dimension over 108 in, girth over 165 in, a palletized shipment, or an Amazon-specified special delivery requirement. TVs and monitors get their own types because they are clamped individually in real handling rather than in groups, so the clamping force floor is higher.
What the SIOC test puts your package through
For the parcel types the sequence runs preconditioning, a shock sequence of drops, vibration both with and without a top load, then a second shock sequence ending on a hazard impact. Drop heights are set by the packed weight, and the exact sequence depends on which of the eight types applies to you.
- The hazard impact is the one people have not pictured. The package is dropped onto a weighted block with an angle-iron edge, standing in for landing on the corner of something else in a trailer. It finds concentrated-load failures that flat drops never will.
- Vibration carries a dynamic top load, so the stacking stress is applied while the package is shaking rather than as a separate compression test.
- Horizontal clamping applies to a band of package sizes, simulating the automated clamp handling in a fulfilment centre. Whether it applies to yours depends on your dimensions.
There is no standalone compression test anywhere in SIOC. That surprises people who have been told SIOC includes compression. The stacking stress is real, it is just folded into the vibration step as a dynamic top load. If your customer wants a separate compression report as a deliverable, say so at intake and we will add it.
What we need from you to quote it
The packed weight, the three outside dimensions, how it ships, and whether the product is fragile. Amazon counts glass, ceramic, porcelain, clay and anything liquid or semi-liquid as fragile, and that classification changes the sample count, so it is worth getting right before you ship anything to us.
From those four answers we confirm which of the eight types applies, how many samples you need to send, and the schedule, then quote it.
A passing result is valid for two years, as long as the product and the packaging both stay unchanged. Change either one, or reach the two-year mark, and the test runs again.
Send fully packed, production-representative units. The test is destructive and sequential on the same specimens, so a package that has already been through part of the sequence cannot be reused for a retest.
One more thing to settle before samples ship: the product damage tolerance. The protocol requires you and Amazon to agree in advance what counts as damage and what post-test condition is acceptable. Get it in writing at the start.
Related Amazon and package testing
If your product cannot ship bare and Amazon will add an outer carton, the test you want is ISTA 6-Amazon Over-Boxing instead. If you are going for the top tier, Frustration-Free Packaging is SIOC plus recyclability and ease-of-opening criteria, tested to this same protocol.
Background on who can run the test is on our APASS lab page, and the overview sits at Amazon package testing. The wider ISTA series covers the same drop and vibration blocks for other channels, and everything is under package testing services. Our full accreditations are listed separately.
