What is RTCA DO-160?
RTCA DO-160, Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment, is the standard that qualifies equipment for installation in an aircraft. It is organised into numbered sections rather than methods, each covering one condition, and it is the environmental half of the evidence package that sits behind a TSO authorisation or an equipment approval. Megalab runs DO-160 environmental testing accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by A2LA.
Which DO-160 sections do we run?
- Section 4: temperature and altitude. Runs on temperature testing and altitude testing.
- Section 5: temperature variation. Runs on temperature testing.
- Section 6: humidity. Runs on humidity testing.
- Section 8: vibration. Runs on vibration and shock testing. Temperature-combined profiles run on combined environment testing.
- Section 10: waterproofness. Runs on ingress protection testing.
- Section 12: sand and dust, DO-160G. Runs on ingress protection testing.
- Section 14: salt fog. Runs on salt spray and corrosion testing.
- Section 24: icing. Runs on temperature testing.
Accredited by A2LA to ISO/IEC 17025 under certificates 5179.01 and 5179.02. See our accreditations.
Our scope also covers customer supplied and industry specifications built on these same technologies, so an internal procedure that calls these methods can be run and reported under the accreditation. Send us the document and we will confirm.
What about the DO-160 EMC sections?
For the EMC sections, 16 onward, we are supported by our in-house partner, Phoenix Testing Labs, so the environmental and EMC sections run as one programme. Send us the requirement and we will scope both.
What we need to quote your DO-160 programme
- The section numbers and the categories your specification assigns to each
- The equipment category, since DO-160 severities are category driven
- Sample dimensions, weight and quantity
- Whether the unit is powered and monitored during each section, and what passes through to it
- Fixturing and mounting orientation for the vibration sections
- Whether the EMC sections are also required, so we can bring the EMC lab in
Frequently asked questions
Environmental qualification testing for airborne equipment, to the numbered sections of RTCA DO-160, covering conditions such as temperature, humidity, vibration and icing.
No. DO-160 is civil aviation and organised by section with category-driven severities; MIL-STD-810 is defence and organised by method with procedure-driven severities. They cover overlapping conditions and are not interchangeable, and a customer needing one will not accept a report against the other.
Yes. The EMC sections are supported by our in-house partner, Phoenix Testing Labs, and run in the same programme as the environmental sections. Send us the requirement and we will scope both.
