What is walk-in environmental chamber testing?
Walk-in environmental chamber testing runs temperature and humidity profiles on a product too big for a standard test chamber: a server rack, a pallet of packaged goods, an outdoor cabinet or a complete machine. The product goes in as it ships, runs powered if it needs to, and comes out with an accredited report. Megalab’s walk-in climate chambers are accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by A2LA, so a large-product result carries the same weight as a bench-scale one.
Why test the whole product?
A cut-down sample tells you how a sample behaves. Large equipment tends to fail where its parts meet, so the assembled product is the one worth testing.
- Results that match the field. Airflow paths, cable runs, seals and the heat one module puts into its neighbour only exist in the finished assembly.
- No fixtures or coupons to build. The product is tested as designed, which saves engineering time and settles any question about whether the sample was representative.
- Several units in one run. Room for multiple units means a batch screen or a side by side design comparison runs in a single booking.
- Hands-on instrumentation. Engineers work inside the chamber to place thermocouples and route cabling, and your team is welcome on site while the product runs.
- Packaging and product together. A full pallet can be conditioned before a transit sequence, so the package is tested at the temperature and humidity it will ship in.
Walk-in chamber features
- Forklift and pallet jack access for skids, carts and wheeled equipment.
- Temperature and humidity in one chamber for cold soak, dry heat, cycling and damp heat profiles.
- Controlled ramp rates for temperature cycling across the chamber range.
- Port access through both side walls for power, signal, thermocouple bundles, fluid lines and air.
- Powered monitoring for the whole profile, with functional checks at each plateau against your pass criteria.
What we test in walk-in chambers
- Temperature and humidity profiles to IEC 60068-2-1, -2-2, -2-14, -2-30 and -2-78, and to MIL-STD-810 Methods 501, 502 and 507. Method detail on temperature testing and humidity testing.
- Package and pallet conditioning to ASTM D4332, holding a full pallet or unitized load at a defined temperature and humidity before a transit test sequence.
- Extended powered runs where several units running at once makes a long dwell practical. See burn-in and environmental stress screening.
- Hot and cold storage simulation for equipment that ships and warehouses assembled.
- Your own specification. Customer and internal procedures built on these methods run under the same accreditation.
Industries that book walk-in chamber testing
Telecom and data centre equipment makers qualifying a populated rack. HVAC, refrigeration and heat pump manufacturers testing the complete unit. EV and e-mobility suppliers testing packs, chargers and drivetrain assemblies. Industrial machinery builders whose product does not come apart sensibly. Packaging teams conditioning full pallets before transit testing. Medical device manufacturers running carts, cabinets and imaging equipment.
Technical specifications
- Usable space: up to 131 x 177 x 94 inches, about 1,262 cubic feet, plus a smaller walk-in for mid-size loads.
- Temperature: -70 C to 90 C, depending on the chamber.
- Humidity: up to 98 % RH at temperatures above 15 C.
- Ramp rate: 3 to 5 C per minute.
- Hotter or faster profiles: our reach-in chambers run to 180 C with faster ramps, for samples up to about 48 inches.
Accredited by A2LA to ISO/IEC 17025 under certificates 5179.01 and 5179.02. See our accreditations.
What we need to quote your test
- Overall dimensions and weight of the product, including any pallet, skid or frame it sits on
- How it gets into the chamber: forklift, pallet jack, wheeled, or lifted
- The standard or specification, or the temperature and humidity profile you need
- How long the exposure runs, since walk-in work is booked as chamber time
- Whether the product is powered, and what has to pass through the chamber wall
- Number of units, since several often fit in one run
- Who performs functional checks, and at what points in the profile
Frequently asked questions
Up to 131 x 177 x 94 inches of usable space, about 1,262 cubic feet, which takes a forklift-loaded pallet, a rack or a complete machine. Send us the dimensions and we will confirm the chamber before anything ships.
A walk-in takes the product assembled, and several units at once. A reach-in is smaller but runs hotter and ramps faster, to 180 C. Samples up to about 48 inches usually go in a reach-in, and anything larger goes in a walk-in.
Yes, up to 98 % relative humidity at temperatures above 15 C, so a rack or a pallet can be held at controlled damp heat.
Yes, including to ASTM D4332 ahead of a transit test sequence. A forklift-loaded pallet goes in as it ships.
Yes. Walk-in temperature and humidity testing is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by A2LA, and the accreditation extends to your own specification where it is built on the same methods.
Send us your product dimensions and the profile, and we will confirm which chamber it books into and quote it.
