Frustration-Free Packaging (FFP) Certification Testing
Frustration-Free Packaging is Amazon's top tier: ships in its own box, fully recyclable, and open in under two minutes without tools. We run the ISTA 6-Amazon testing behind it at an APASS member lab.
- Amazon's Highest Tier: FFP carries every SIOC requirement plus recyclability and ease-of-opening criteria on top.
- No Over-Box, No Prep Fee: The retail box ships as it is, which removes both the added carton and the charge for filling it.
- Tested to ISTA 6-Amazon SIOC: The same accredited protocol, run on our own drop and vibration rigs.
- Design Feedback With the Result: When a package fails we name the hazard element that did it and where the damage started.

What is Frustration-Free Packaging?
Frustration-Free Packaging is Tier 1 of Amazon’s Ships in Product Packaging programme, and the highest of its three certified tiers. An FFP package ships in its own container with no Amazon over-box, uses curbside-recyclable materials throughout, and can be opened by a customer within 120 seconds with minimal use of scissors or a box cutter.
The transit half of that is proven by testing. FFP is certified against the ISTA 6-Amazon SIOC protocol, the same procedure that certifies Tier 2. Amazon accepts that test from an APASS lab or from any ISTA certified laboratory. The difference between the two tiers is not the test. It is the extra design criteria FFP layers on top.
What FFP requires beyond SIOC
A package that passes the transit test still fails FFP if it misses the design rules. The ones that catch people out:
- 100 percent curbside recyclable: corrugated and other paper-based materials, plus plastics marked SPI 1, 2, 4 or 5. Printing and treatments must not affect recyclability.
- No blister packs or plastic inserts: also no packaging peanuts, shredded paper or welded clam shells. Twist ties are allowed, but only to manage cord organization.
- Open within 120 seconds: with minimal use of scissors or a box cutter, not none at all.
- Protective enough to ship alone: every SIOC requirement still applies, because the box is still the shipping container.
That combination is why FFP work usually runs as design iteration rather than a single pass or fail. Removing a plastic insert changes how the product is restrained, which changes how it behaves in the drop sequence. It is worth budgeting for a second round.
FFP, SIOC or PFP: which tier applies?
All three are certified, all three remove some cost, and they are decided by what your packaging can already do.
- Tier 1, FFP: ships bare, recyclable, tool-free opening. Tested to ISTA 6-Amazon SIOC. The most work, the most benefit.
- Tier 2, SIOC: ships bare with no over-box, without the recyclability and opening criteria. Same test protocol.
- Tier 3, PFP: for items below the 6.0 x 4.0 x 0.375 in minimum the other two tiers require. Amazon adds an over-box, and your primary packaging is tested inside it to ISTA 6-Amazon Over-Boxing.
If your product already survives shipping in its retail box, start at SIOC and treat FFP as the upgrade. If it does not, the honest answer is Over-Boxing.
Related Amazon and package testing
Who is allowed to run the certification test, and what happens to the report afterwards, is covered on our APASS lab page. The overview sits at Amazon package testing.
The drop and vibration blocks behind all of this belong to the wider ISTA series, which also covers FedEx and Costco programmes. For a customer-defined distribution cycle rather than a retailer protocol, see ASTM D4169. Everything is under package testing services, and our full accreditations are listed separately.

Fragile products cannot be self-tested, they need an ISTA certified lab. Megalab is ISTA certified and APASS.
Built for Iteration
Removing an insert changes how the product is held. We report the hazard element that caused the damage and where it started.
