What are MIL-STD-202 and MIL-STD-883?
Both are United States Department of Defense method standards, and both are cited far more often than they are read. MIL-STD-202 covers test methods for electronic and electrical component parts. MIL-STD-883 covers test methods and procedures for microcircuits. Each defines numbered methods, and a component specification typically calls several of them by number without describing what they involve. Megalab holds A2LA accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 for the environmental and mechanical methods in both.
MIL-STD-202 methods, components
- Method 101: salt atmosphere. Runs on salt spray and corrosion testing.
- Method 106: moisture resistance. Runs on humidity testing.
- Method 107: thermal shock. Runs on thermal shock testing.
- Method 201: vibration. Runs on vibration and shock testing.
- Method 204: vibration, high frequency. Runs on vibration and shock testing.
- Method 214: random vibration. Runs on vibration and shock testing.
MIL-STD-883 methods, microcircuits
- Method 1002: immersion. Runs on ingress protection testing.
- Method 1004: moisture resistance. Runs on humidity testing.
- Method 1009: salt atmosphere. Runs on salt spray and corrosion testing.
- Method 1010: temperature cycling. Runs on temperature testing.
- Method 1011: thermal shock. Runs on thermal shock testing.
- Method 1012: thermal characteristics. Runs on temperature testing.
- Method 1013: dew point. Runs on humidity testing.
- Method 1031: salt spray corrosion. Runs on salt spray and corrosion testing.
- Method 2002: mechanical shock. Runs on vibration and shock testing.
- Method 2005: vibration fatigue. Runs on vibration and shock testing.
- Method 2007: vibration, variable frequency. Runs on vibration and shock testing.
- Method 2026: random vibration. Runs on vibration and shock testing.
Accredited by A2LA to ISO/IEC 17025 under certificates 5179.01 and 5179.02. See our accreditations.
Our scope also covers customer supplied and industry specifications built on these same technologies, so an internal procedure that calls these methods can be run and reported under the accreditation. Send us the document and we will confirm.
Connector methods, MIL-STD-1344
Connector specifications sit with the same buyer and call a parallel set of methods, which are on the same certificate.
- Section 1001: salt spray. Runs on salt spray and corrosion testing.
- Section 1002: temperature and thermal shock. Runs on thermal shock testing.
- Section 2005: vibration. Runs on vibration and shock testing.
The EIA-364 connector series is also on our scope, including EIA-364-17, -26, -27, -28, -31, -32, -50 and -110, covering temperature life, salt spray, shock, vibration, humidity and fine sand.
What we need to quote your component programme
- The method numbers your specification names, and from which standard
- The test conditions or letters the specification assigns to each method
- Part dimensions, quantity and how they are supplied
- Whether parts are monitored electrically during the test, and who performs the electrical measurements
- Fixturing, boards or sockets needed to mount the parts
- Any sequence the specification fixes between methods
Frequently asked questions
MIL-STD-202 covers electronic and electrical component parts; MIL-STD-883 covers microcircuits. The method numbering differs and the two are not interchangeable, so a specification citing one will not accept a report against the other.
Yes, to MIL-STD-1344 Sections 1001, 1002 and 2005 and to the EIA-364 series, all on the same accredited scope.
Yes. JESD22-A104 temperature cycling runs on the same chambers as MIL-STD-883 Method 1010.
